Jerry Lawler vs Terry Funk March 21, 1981 Memphis Wrestling
This match is pretty good for its time. Modern wrestling fans might have to get past the fact there are no pseudo mma moves. This is pure theatrical wrestling for lack of a better expression. There is possibly no one is better at that superhero style of wrestling performance than Jerry Lawler. Apparently there were others that Jerry got his style from such as Jackie Fargo who was also a magnificent performer, but possibly no one took the theatrics innovated by Gorgeous George, only in the vein of a hero to the next level quite like Jerry The King Lawler. His style of performances revolutionized the sport of professional wrestling and would prove successful when wrestling went mainstream with the likes of Hulk Hogan, The Ultimate Warrior, Sting, John Cena and The Rock all borrowing from Jerry.
The match woves a classic comeback story as the hero is beaten to a bloody pulp only to make a magnificent rally to overcome the villain. And there have been few villains as great as the Hardcore Icon Terry Funk, one of wrestling's most legendary performers. These are 2 of the best showcasing a great spectacle for the audience. It's a must see for fans of classic wrestling. Rating: ****/5 Stars
